Compendium Bury: Laboratory

Bury has become an unusual haven for escape room lovers, with a number of venues and games slightly higher than you’d expect for a town of its size. Trapped In was the first venue, with Time Race eventually taking over their venue, and now Clue HQ taking over their second location. Elsewhere in the town, you’ve got Compendium, who opened towards the end of 2018 with their first room, the excellent “Wrong Turn”, a game which received a lot of highly deserved praise of its Hollywood set design and great puzzles.

They’ve barely stopped to breathe, already opening the second game Laboratory, but does it match the high standard set in game one?

“You and your friends have been trusted by your uncle a retired medical professor to find and steal the Laboratory’s well-kept secret remedy needed to cure his wife Isabel. You have been you have been entrusted with all the information you need to gain entry to the lab but no idea how to find the antidote undetected and once inside you find yourselves trapped by the auto lock doors. Do you have what it takes to save a life and escape the lab with the antidote?”

The theming isn’t designed to be as eye-catching as “Wrong Turn”. Instead of an abandoned, creepy old house, you’re in a much more sterile science lab, but it’s still designed to a high standard. The game takes place through a rather large space, all of which is well utilised for the gameplay.

The puzzles were the absolute highlight of the room though, with some great ideas executed to a strong level. There was a physical challenge in particular that felt very Crystal Mazey, but was a fun element that required some teamwork. There’s also a piece of technology that gadget lovers will enjoy mastering, and although it’s a relatively simple idea, it’s fun and takes some time.

The game had a great flow, and was at times quite open, meaning you could go off in different directions to work on seperate puzzles, although you’d often have to regroup to get what you need.

Overall, I often groan at the idea of *another* science lab game, but this was one of the rare few that presented some refreshing ideas and an hour of great fun. A very good game, well worth a trip if you’re on a Bury escape binge.
